Prompt: Sustainability
Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project was based on our experiences growing up, not knowing what sustainability is or the importance of it. We decided to create a system that is engaging and interesting for young students and adults alike to help them appreciate our planet and the limited resources that we have.
What it does
We have built a game where students explore a standard house, clicking on items that they believe to be non-sustainable (e.g., a fluorescent lightbulb) or great examples of sustainable living (e.g., a recycling bin). Clicking on these items displays information about their sustainability and ways to work towards such living in that specific area of the house. Students are rewarded with points for finding objects and are given a final score and rating at the end which displays how well they did. They have the ability to print a certificate confirming their accomplishment and to try again for a better score.
How we built it
We started by listing different rooms and different items around an average American house which may or may not be sustainable (or may have room for improvement). Then, we created a framework for adding virtual rooms to our virtual house at the same time as creating the defining features of the game, like a score counter, for example. Then, we used our framework to define each clickable area on the background images and what popups they generate.
Challenges we ran into
- Clickable regions overlapping each other
- Tablet support
- Printable certificate
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Printable certificate
- Each object having applicable and worthwhile descriptions
- A game that looks good enough
What we learned
We learned primarily of the benefits and drawbacks of an HTML/CSS/Javascript-based web game. However, we also learned much more about the sustainability efforts that are happening around the world and how to apply those to our lives.
What's next for The Sustainability Game
We hope to reach out to elementary school and middle school teachers in the Waco area and around the country to offer this game as a complement to their lesson plans on sustainability. In addition, we would add additional rooms of the house or other buildings/locations, such as a school, a park, etc.
