Inspiration
This pandemic was not equal. As a resident of Seattle, Washington, I've always seen the homeless population in the city. When the pandemic hit, I took an interest in learning more about how to help them, and saw how the pandemic was unequally effecting the homeless population. I wish there would have been a resource for me to learn exactly how I can support the homeless population in these trying times. And from there, The Sunrise Movement was born, a resource for both those that want to support the homeless population, and those that are homeless.
What it does
The Sunrise Movement provides high quality resources for people to educate themselves on how the pandemic has affected the homeless, and resources to take action. There is also an interactive Shelter Map feature, so that those that are homeless can easily find a shelter and resources to help them. This website is a one-stop website for all resources necessary to educate yourself and take action. Many times, people will forget to take action, and this website ensures that it is not forgotten.
How we built it
To build this project, I used Qoom, an online text editor. For the "Contact Us" page, I also used the forms tutorial on Qoom to build my own form. I also used the languages HTML and CSS to code the entire website.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges I ran into include finding reliable research, using APIs, and designing the website to look accessible and friendly to all. Finding reliable information proved to be difficult, but eventually I began to discover public health research journals, which provided reliable information on the topic. I also had never used APIs before, so when I was embedding the maps there were many technical difficulties in styling it to match the wireframe. Finally, I wanted the site to efficiently display the problem and solution, but also seem friendly. Finding this balance in my design proved to be difficult, but also very rewarding.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud that I was able to learn how to use map APIs to insert two different interactive maps onto my site. I had never done that before, so the challenge that came with it was very interesting. I am also proud of the minimalistic aesthetic that I was able to achieve when designing the site.
What we learned
I learned how to use APIs, how to work when under a time crunch, and new styling techniques in CSS. This site made me challenge myself to a new extent, as I tried using many new principles in it. I also learned how to use Qoom, a new text editor to code my website.
What's next for The Sunrise Movement
In the future, I hope to continue updating the current resources we provide, with more articles, videos, petitions, etc. I also hope to add a help and support hotline list as a resource for those that are homeless. I hope to expand this website into a one-stop directory to support the homeless during the pandemic and beyond it.
