Inspiration
When developing an idea for this event as kids we all remembered playing a game where each member of the group would say a sentence. As the game goes on it becomes like another childhood game, telephone where what you start with is more than likely not what you end up with. It was a fun and exciting game where you never knew how it would end.
What it does
The Story Goes is a story telling platform where each user can send a video snippet to another friend requesting them to send their own video snippet. After the original user has decided on the number of total segments, the video segments are combined to create a combination in one video. As the video grows after every segment, users can view the video.
How we built it
Our app called The Story Goes… is built with FastAPI. We chose FastAPI for its speed because we are handling so much data, so we needed a platform that could handle everything our app does. We are also using a SQLite database because it is relatively simple to run, and it does not lock us into any one system, which allows for a different system to be easily swapped for scaling purposes. Our design is security forward, using SHA256 for hashing, and using a secure session cookie to save an authentication state
Challenges we ran into
There were numerous challenges along the way. Many of which came from trying new things. Uploading files, combining video, and transmitting huge quantities of data all proved to be quite a challenge. FastAPI is an amazing platform, but we ran into issues with more complex functions because it is very new. Lack of documentation or unclear documentation proved to be one of our greatest struggles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really excited to have this level of mobile integration in just 24 hours. We purpose built this web application for mobile devices. Our uploads open the system camera directly.
What we learned
Tyler has had previous coding experience in various languages. Megan and Katie are fairly new to coding with prior experience in Python. Tyler learned how to use ffmpeg to handle video files. Megan and Katie learned CSS, CSS Flexbox, and HTML to incorporate styling into the project.
What's next for The Story Goes…
Social media is no longer about telling stories and sharing experiences. Now influencers and filters dominate social media taking away the fun experience of telling a story without knowing exactly how it ends. This leads to our solution: The Story Goes which will bring storytelling and bring a more positive light to social media.
