Inspiration
The inspiration for The Story Behind India's First War of Independence came from a desire to reframe the 1857 uprising from an Indian perspective. Too often labeled a "mutiny," this historic revolt was actually a significant, unified resistance against colonial rule. We wanted to create a space where people—especially students and history enthusiasts—could explore this event through a lens of truth, emotion, and national pride.
What it does
The website is an immersive storytelling platform that walks users through the events, causes, key figures, and aftermath of the 1857 rebellion. It combines historical facts with visually engaging elements, providing an educational yet emotional journey that honors India's fight for independence.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the front end, ensuring a responsive and accessible design. The timeline and character sections were carefully crafted based on extensive research. We also used Netlify to deploy the site, ensuring it runs smoothly and is easily accessible. I would also like to mention the use of bolt to help me with the designs and making them user friendly.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was curating accurate information from various sources, especially when colonial and local narratives conflicted. Designing a site that was both informative and engaging also took several iterations. Ensuring historical sensitivity while maintaining clarity and visual appeal was another balancing act we had to master.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of how the site brings history to life. From highlighting lesser-known heroes like Begum Hazrat Mahal to creating a seamless timeline of events, every detail was crafted with care. The positive feedback from users who learned something new or felt emotionally moved by the content has been incredibly rewarding.
What we learned
This project taught us how powerful storytelling can be when backed by solid research and purposeful design. We also gained technical skills in web development, historical analysis, and project coordination. More importantly, we deepened our appreciation for the sacrifices made during India’s early struggle for freedom.
What's next for The story behind India's First War of Independence
We plan to expand the website by adding interactive quizzes, interviews with historians, and a section dedicated to local legends from different regions of India. We also aim to translate the content into multiple languages to make it accessible to a wider audience. This is just the beginning of our journey to make history engaging, inclusive, and meaningful.
