The Statistics of Gun Violence within the United States of America

By: Nghi Huynh, Minh Mai, Joseph Tran

Inspiration

Gun violence occurs daily within the United States and we wanted to see if there is an increase in cases compared to the past. Additionally, we wanted to see if there are certain areas in the country that are more prone to gun violence than others.

What it does

It plots out maps and charts to help us identify which areas of the country are more prone to gun violence than others.

How we built it

We built it by utilizing Altair, an advanced Python visualization library in addition to the UW CSE 163 Python libraries.

Challenges we ran into

We had issues with plotting our maps and figuring out which charts would present the information better. Additionally, we had to deal with multiple datasets and get them to work well together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We made plots that were easy to understand and were able to easily compile a report based on our visualizations.

What we learned

States with a bigger population were more prone to gun violence. Additionally, states on the eastern side of the country seem to have more gun violence than the western states.

What's next for us?

Since our dataset ended in March 2018, we would like to see how much gun violence has changed.
