Inspiration

Have you ever felt ravenous but completely bamboozled on where to eat? Too many choices and too little information? Having experienced this ourselves, we decided to create The Starving Student. Whether it's the herculean task of finding restaurants friendly to your dietary restrictions, or finding out whether they accept T-Cards, all the information you need is in one place.

What it does

Students in pursuit of their next meal can enter what they desire. Our search function recognizes keywords and filters out restaurants that do not meet the criteria. The result will be a comprehensive list, sorted by proximity. All relevant restaurants' names, locations, t-card policy, dietary accommodations, websites, ratings and directions will be shown on screen.

Challenges we ran into

We had differing levels of experience with the various aspects of the stack. This was an obstacle we had to overcome as a team. A particularly nasty problem we faced, was deploying our project onto our domain. This was due to several complications in configuring the required paths for domain compounded with other issues, such as merging our develop branch with our main.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For most of our members, it was the first time working with GitHub. However, we developed in an environment that simulated professional working conditions, and worked with a develop branch that was tested rigorously before being committed to our main. It was an insightful experience, and completing a project from scratch - going through the brainstorming process, gathering data, implementing our code and the long hours debugging - was satisfying and educational.

What we learned

We gained a lot of valuable technical skills, such as working with json files, working with JavaScript and React, using the Google Maps API and as mentioned previously, working with GitHub.

What's next for The Starving Student

Due to the inherent time constraints, we were not able to be as extensive in detail as we would have liked. Future plans include:

  1. Expanding the range of restaurants around campus and create pages for the other campuses.
  2. Display any promotions or discounts that may be happening.
