Inspiration Inspired by the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, we wanted to create a minimalist 3D solar system exploration experience.
What it does An interactive solar system visualization where users can fly through space with WASD controls, click planets for information, and observe a zero-gravity astronaut. Features a stark black/white/red color palette and slow, deliberate camera movements for a cinematic feel.
How we built it React Three Fiber + Three.js for 3D rendering, TypeScript, Zustand, and TailwindCSS for the interface. Custom camera control system supporting keyboard and touch input.
Challenges we ran into Transforming from anime aesthetics to 2001's minimalism required major refactoring, implementing intuitive camera-relative controls, and maintaining smooth performance on mobile devices.
Accomplishments that we're proud of Achieving cinematic minimalist aesthetics, smooth 60fps rendering, realistic zero-gravity animation, and a completely silent space experience.
What we learned Building 3D scenes with React Three Fiber, the importance of aesthetic consistency, and performance optimization techniques.
What's next Adding classical music, more celestial bodies, realistic orbital physics, and VR support.
