The Space - The Professional Flow Control Platform

Inspiration

The current ongoing pandemic is affecting our everyday lives deeply. COVID-19 is extremely infectious and is still causing numerous people to lose their lives around the world. From the study of scientists, COVID’s spreading is closely related to close contact and droplets from coughing or sneezing. Therefore, maintaining social distance is one of the top priorities on the list. The 1.5 metre distance is relatively easy to implement for outdoor settings, but in indoor settings, it is not the same case. It is not so easy to follow the Government's advice with bare eyes and feelings, which always lead to an illusion. Therefore a more accurate and professional solution is required.

What it does

The Space is a platform inspired by the social distancing rule and provides a better visualization of room capacity. It can be implemented on top of the current surveillance system, by accessing the live camera footage, the platform can count the number of people within a room and show the availability in real time. The user can thus choose a room that has a high vacancy rate to ensure everyone’s safety.

How we built it

To achieve fast and accurate human counting, the openCV library is required. Therefore, python is used as our programming language and Django as the web framework.

Challenges we ran into

The most challenging part of this project is that none of us had experience with Django before, thus the learning was hard and painful. However, the sun is always behind the storm, the hardship turned into a strong sense of accomplishment once the problems were solved.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The platform uses computer vision and machine learning technology that provides accurate and fast human counting. With this platform, manual counting is no longer needed which makes the whole process more efficient and helps the social distancing rule being followed more closely.

What we learned

From this project, we learnt countless skills that we were unable to learn from the book, such as, web design, logo design, video editing and most importantly, teamwork. It is very fulfilling to come up with an idea and make it come true.
