Inspiration

I was inspired by the idea of space and how much it excites people across ages, but especially kids. They become naturally curious and it's something I wanted to encourage with my project. For instance, I made sure that while there would be information about the order of the planets in real life, anyone using the website could go in any order they like and visit each section as many times as they like. I really wanted to lean into the sense of freedom and curiosity that draws people to studying space in the first place.

What it does

My project is an educational website where kids can go through each planet of the solar system and learn some new information, fun facts, and watch engaging videos on the topic.

How I built it

I challenged myself to build this website with just one page, and used HTML, CSS, and JQuery. I made all the illustrations included on the page myself using Adobe Illustrator

Challenges I ran into

One of the big challenges I ran into was dealing with the fact that Javascript would override my CSS in a way that wouldn't let me include certain interactivity. Finding the solution to that problem was the biggest cost on time, but also a big relief and made completing the rest much easier.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of the amount I learnt through searching online and consulting documentation. I had some experience with Javascript before, but now I feel much more confident in my ability to use it in new ways.

What I learned

One of the things I learnt is definitely to save or comment out versions of code I don't like instead of deleting them. Doing that would've saved me hours on this project.

What's next for The Solar System

When not on a time crunch, I'd love to add more functionality to the site. This could include more information and resources, but also things like small quizzes or trivia questions.
