Snow-covered Fairy Islands

Inspiration

We aim to create an open-world game filled with the magical winter Christmas atmosphere, allowing players to explore, collect, battle, and dance interactively with cute snowman NPCs on the seven snow-covered islands. The abundance of Christmas candy canes, fairy creatures, and freely drivable planes throughout the island adds a touch of fantasy and fun to the game, enabling players to experience a winter fairy-tale adventure.

What it does

Players can freely explore 7 unique islands, collect red Christmas wand candies, and choose companion pets that follow them near animal statues. Face off against evil snakes and the Medusa statue in lighthearted battles, fly a plane across the islands, set off fireworks, and dance with snowman NPCs. Complete a variety of fun tasks, and eventually journey alongside friendly elf animals, making every adventure magical and relaxing.

How we built it

We used the Meta Horizon editor to create a rich and open-world map, and also designed interactive NPCs, collection tasks, and various scene models and beautiful costumes using GenAI. Through custom animations and special effects, we achieved a unique experience where players interact with the environment and creatures.

Challenges we ran into

When designing the free exploration of the 7 islands, balancing the collected items, designing multiple gameplay modes, and ensuring that the gameplay modes can facilitate communication and interaction among players are the challenging aspects of this game's setup.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have successfully created a fantasy world filled with festive atmosphere, where players can freely explore, collect, engage in light battles, and social interactions. Particularly, the collection of hundreds of Christmas candies, the beautiful and atmosphere-filled islands, and the gameplay of circling the islands by plane have greatly enhanced the game's fun and freedom.

What we learned

By developing this game, we have learned how to balance exploration, combat, and mission experiences in an open world, as well as how to establish emotional connections between players and the virtual world through details and interactions.

What's next for Snow-covered Fairy Islands

In the future, we plan to add more festival activities, new islands, unlockable fairy companion skills, and multiplayer interaction modes, so that players can not only explore the islands but also enjoy the fantastical adventure together with their friends.
