Inspiration
Hello everybody, My name is Talha Khan, and I’ve built a smart door.
Inspired by Jarvis from the Iron man movies, I propose a smart door that contains an Alexa Echo Plus and motion sensors embedded in the doors design in order to provide next generation home automation and An illustrious Voice User Inter Face using AI. The Smart door that I’ve built is a front door system that serves as not only a front door security system, but a visitor friendly entity that can speak to visitors of homeowners in meaningful manners.
What it does
The system is as follows, a visitor walks up to the front door of a home. The motion sensor picks up activity and activates the Alexa Skill, greeting the visitor and asking what brings them to the abode. A visitor may reply by stating they are here to see the homeowner, or they might be delivering a package. If a package is being delivered, Alexa will send a text to the homeowner through twilio stating the package just got to the house and will greet the deliverer goodbye. If the visitor is here to see the homeowner, Alexa will notify the homeowner through text and will ask the visitor if they would like to pass a message of their own through text. Alexa will take the speech message from the visitor, execute Speach to Text technology, and text the message to the homeowner.
How I built it
So, the technology used in this project includes AWS on their cloud engine, particularly their server less compute lambda functions, the Alexa Skills SDK, the Twilio API for text messaging, zigbee based Wireless Motion Sensors, and of course the Amazon Echo Plus as hardware. Coming into this hackathon, I was familiar with how the Twilio API worked and I had worked on an Alexa Skills project before with a team but never really looked into the documentation until this weekend. Needless to say, the Alexa Documentation was extremely dense to traverse considering the cloud nature and I feel much more knowledgeable in the nuances of the cloud. I have never worked with Motion sensors before and really working with the motion sensors has put me on to just how powerful hardware can be.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Im proud of getting it done man,i didnt expect to finish, that fear in ma heart was crazy.
What I learned
VUI's (Voice User Interfaces) Are the future. But alas, they are still infantile in the sense that theres just way too many dialogues you can follow. Especially for code.
What's next for The Smart Door
Well, Jarvis needs an eye ;). the more sensors hooked up the Alexa the more capable she becomes, hopefully she can serve the human race better than ourselves someday.
