AI-Powered Smart Glasses for Construction Safety
Inspiration
Construction workers face risks such as falls, falling objects, electrical hazards, heavy machinery, and harsh weather conditions. Most existing safety systems are reactive and respond only after an incident occurs.
This inspired us to ask: What if smart glasses could understand hazards around a worker and warn them before an accident happens?
What We Learned
We learned that simply detecting objects is not enough. A useful safety system needs to understand the context, severity, and urgency of a hazard while avoiding unnecessary warnings that can cause alert fatigue.
How We Built It
We designed an AI-powered safety system for smart glasses that combines computer vision and environmental information to detect hazards and provide real-time audio warnings. Our planned system includes proximity warnings, PPE detection, weather-aware risk assessment, emergency escalation, and shared hazard information between workers.
Challenges We Faced
The biggest challenges were designing a system that can operate in real time, deciding which hazards should trigger warnings, reducing false alerts, and building a practical solution within the limited time and hardware available during the hackathon.
Our goal is to transform smart glasses into an AI safety companion that can perceive the environment, understand risks, and warn workers before accidents happen.spiration
