Inspiration

In the growing Western struggle to uphold the values of democracy, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, foreign interference poses a challenge to the ideals we cherish and have defended. While extensive scrutiny has been directed at certain foreign interferences, such as Russia's influence since the Cold War, China's impact remains less examined. Introducing the Silk Route—a strategic approach to uncovering and understanding Chinese interference on a global scale!

What it does

The interactive website allows you to see the heatmap of Chinese influence across the globe. The media index shows you the influence of each specific Chinese parent media company and then the sentiment analysis has Chat GPT analyze the mood of tweets from positive, negative, and neutral that is displayed as a pie chart at the end. Finally, we have Lida, which transforms data files into interactive, query-based visual stories and insights.

How we built it

We used React, Javascript, and JVectorMap for the interactive website. We used Pandas, jupyter notebook, python, and Tensorflow for data processing in the backend. For Lida, we used OpenAi, Microsoft Lida, and Streamlit to host

Challenges we ran into

Cleaning the data; translating the regions such as anglophone and lusophones to individual countries into our map. Another data trouble was that some follower counts were in strings instead of integers so we had to convert it into integers and then work with that data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a fully functional webpage with the heatmap and visualizations as intended. Learned and adapted cutting-edge technology of Lida

What we learned

Processing data, cleaning it, and making insights. Working with AI and integrating the different parts into one responsive app.

What's next for The Silk Route
