The Secret Detective

Inspiration

Most educational games focus on teaching first and entertainment second, which often makes them feel like digital textbooks. We wanted to reverse that approach.

Our vision is to create a game that players enjoy because it's fun, while learning naturally happens through exploration, observation, experimentation, and problem-solving. Rather than interrupting gameplay with lessons or quizzes, educational concepts become part of the adventure itself.

Although our current prototype demonstrates this idea using crafting and scientific materials, the same framework can be expanded to teach a wide range of subjects, including STEM, history, geography, and logical reasoning.

What it does

The Secret Detective is an educational detective adventure where players must investigate environments, avoid enemy guards, collect useful items, craft gadgets, and complete missions using strategy rather than brute force. The core gameplay mechanic is crafting , when facing an enemy the player must choose to fight but for that it must craft a weapon using items it collects and which forces the player to identify and understand which item combination would lead to what.

For example, upon collecting a KNO3 and sugar , the player can create a mixture which when contained in a tin can , will allow player to create a smoke bomb.

Instead of directly teaching concepts through quizzes or lectures, the game encourages players to observe carefully, think critically, experiment with different approaches, and make logical decisions.

Our vision is to create an educational experience disguised as an exciting detective game, where learning becomes a natural part of gameplay rather than the primary focus.

How we built it

The project was developed using Godot Engine 4 with GDScript.

Current features include:

Character movement Enemy AI with vision cones Inventory and item collection Crafting system Throwable gadgets (Smoke Bomb and EMP) Health system Interactive environment Stealth-based gameplay

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing entertainment with education. We wanted every mechanic to feel like part of an enjoyable game rather than an educational exercise.

Designing the crafting system also required careful thought so that experimenting with different combinations felt rewarding while remaining intuitive. In addition, implementing enemy AI, stealth mechanics, and integrating the inventory with gameplay required multiple iterations before the systems worked smoothly together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of building a playable prototype that successfully combines multiple gameplay systems into a cohesive experience.

A complete exploration and stealth gameplay loop A functional inventory and crafting system Interactive gadgets that directly influence gameplay An educational design philosophy that integrates learning naturally instead of relying on quizzes

Most importantly, we've built a foundation that can grow into a much larger educational adventure.

What's next for The Secret Detective

Our long-term vision is to expand The Secret Detective into a complete educational adventure game.
