About the Project: The Second Glance

The Second Glance is a sensory audio short film lasting one minute and 49 seconds (1:49) that forces the viewer to abandon sight and experience the world through the hearing and touch of a young blind woman, Wendy, and her guide dog, Paradis.

Inspiration

The primary inspiration is the real-life story of Wendy and her guide dog, Paradis (sourced from the YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJS3yLtsowE). Our desire was not to film Wendy through a camera lens, but to recreate her world through her own ears.

The project is deeply rooted in the technical reality of their daily life, highlighting their "true teamwork" dynamic. The source detailed the specific commands Paradis uses to signal pedestrian crossings and avoid obstacles, and emphasized the emotional bond of the dog as a constant companion who makes the walk "less stressful."

What it does

The film provides an immersive audio experience where sound is transformed into vital visual information. It compels the viewer to perceive the world in the same way Wendy does: where one hears not just simple noises, but essential visual information.

The goal is to prove the film's final line: WHAT YOU ARE HEARING... IS WHAT WENDY SEES. The sounds of the water faucet, fabric, or Braille paper are, for Wendy, the equivalent of a light source or a topographic map.

How we built it

The film was constructed as a musical score of subjective sounds lasting 1:49, divided into three dramatic acts.

Construction Method: The project was built entirely on sound. Every sound and noise was separately generated using ElevenLabs, which allowed for absolute control over the texture and proximity (the "microphonic" aspect) of each sound element. The final assembly and editing were done in CapCut, focusing solely on audio synchronization and mixing, without using images, to achieve illustration only through sound and the addition of a final text explaining our vision.

The Audio Narrative Arc:

The Awakening (0:00 – 0:25) : Focuses on Wendy's initial awakening and immediate mastery over her personal environment, establishing the core sounds of intimacy (breathing, fabric).

The Morning Routine (0:25 – 0:46) : Detailed audio sequence covering the essential morning routine with Paradis, emphasizing the bond and preparation for the day.

The Journey and Tension (0:46 – 1:24) : Extended phase dedicated to the walk to school, highlighting the "true teamwork" of navigation, the tension of the street, and the use of hyper-detailed sound (like the hand gliding along a wall, the Touch Guide).

The Sanctuary and Revelation (1:24 – 1:49) : The climax, where Wendy enters the school, hears the sounds of welcoming children, prepares to play the piano, and expresses her "vision" through the musical climax before the final message appears.

Challenges we ran into

Hyper-Realistic Sound Design : The biggest challenge was generating noises using AI tools that were not only recognizable but sufficiently sharp and textured to serve as "visual" information. Achieving this fidelity with ElevenLabs was a critical hurdle.

Dramatic Silence : We had to master the art of stopping sounds SHARPLY (e.g., the faucet, the piano music) to create an effective narrative effect of tension or resolution.

Rhythm over 1:49 : Condensing a full emotional arc, from awakening to revelation, required strict discipline on the duration of each sound to maintain the narrative rhythm over an extended duration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully achieved immediate empathy through a purely audio medium, forcing the listener into the protagonist's mindset. We are most proud of:

The complete realization of the subjective sound design, where every texture (fabric, metal, water) successfully carries visual weight.

The effective use of the dramatic silence and the final musical climax to deliver the central emotional core of the film.

Proving that AI-generated audio can be meticulously controlled and layered to support a sophisticated, non-visual narrative.

Using the project as a platform to raise awareness about the unique lived experiences of blind individuals, emphasizing that our perceptions and daily realities are not universal.

What we learned

This project confirmed the incredible power of subjective sound design as a narrative tool. I learned that for a story centered on hearing, every sound must have a clear dramatic intention and a textured quality that goes beyond ordinary listening. The paradox of "seeing through hearing" is the most effective narrative tool for sensory immersion.

What's next for The Second Glance

We plan to explore the next phase by composing the final piano music (the "vision") to perfectly match the emotional arc established by the sound effects. We will also investigate creating a minimalist visual accompaniment (black screen with text transitions) to prepare the short film for submission to film and audio festivals.
