Inspiration

After surveying a sample group of people, we came to learn that the weather and path options played a huge role in why people did not want to walk. So we came up with a solution.

What it does

Weather Walk is a navigation tool dedicated solely for walking/running. We take the current weather into consideration and give users the best paths to avoid certain weather exposures. Do not want to walk in the sun? Take path A, it is covered with trees and the building to your right provides shade from the sun on the east. Want to avoid the rain? Take path B, the route is covered with building that stand against the wind direction, providing cover from the rain.

How we built it

Website: A single-file HTML/JS/CSS web app. Core stack: Leaflet (interactive map), OpenStreetMap tiles (map imagery), OSRM (Open Source Routing Machine, public "by foot" routing API, returns real street-following walking paths + turn-by-turn steps), Nominatim (address/place search autocomplete), SunCalc (computes sun position (azimuth/altitude) for the user's coordinates and current time, OpenWeatherMap (live temperature), Tailwind CSS (play CDN) + Font Awesome, Web Speech API (voice guidance), Geolocation API (pulls the user's live location).

App: React Native + Expo. Core Stack: Leaflet + MapBox (Interactive Map), OpenWeatherMap (Live temperature). StyleSheet API for Styling, Philadelphia Open Source Dataset, Open-Meteo for temperatures, rain, wind, snowfall and air quality. SerpAPI, ElevenLabsAPI.

Challenges we ran into

Figuring out the scope of our project and planning its execution within the given time frame was a challenge. There was so much we wanted to do, but we understood that the important things come first. Finding the right datasets and APIs for this project wasn't a walk in the park (get it), we had to do in-depth research of available Philly sources and find Open API sources. Once we were able to locate those, it was streamlining from there.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our group demonstrated advanced teamwork, technical communication skills, and coding techniques. We were able to get both a website, and a functional app up and running. We learned more about datamining, usage of APIs, and team coding. Since this is most of our first hackathon, it was definitely a learning experience.

What's next for Weather Walk

Weather Walk has great potential to grow into a walker, runner, and biker's go to navigation app. We plan to expand to include running essentials such as pace tracking, steps, and miles. For bikers, we would add biking routes and road conditions.
