Inspiration
Our group sought to accomplish an ambitious task using unfamiliar API's and programming languages. We found the Google Maps API to be a versatile, yet challenging tool allowing route customization. We've frequently walked around the Binghamton area and wondered if we could develop a program that provided an alternative route with captivating attractions.
What it does
Given a source and destination area, along with attraction type and radius value from the midpoint between the source and destination, create a route that intersects a prominent attraction.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and Javascript for the frontend and backend.
Challenges we ran into
None of us have used these languages before so it was a learning experience. We originally tried a Java-friendly implementation but decided that learning these new languages would be a net-positive experience. We have also never implemented APIs in our programming projects before this endeavor.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The project as a whole is a tremendous accomplishment. We've run into many bugs and errors along the way; yet, we persevered and managed to produce a sound webpage.
What we learned
We've expanded out programming language knowledge. Half of the group became familiar with HTML and CSS while the other half practiced JavaScript.
What's next for The Scenic Route
Expand the capabilities of the program to allow multiple attractions and improve the system in which the attraction is selected.
