Inspiration
In school, I'm very interested in Biology and especially Biotechnology, so I was thinking about medicines and questions regarding one's medicines. These can be questions regarding interactions between two or more medicines consumed, as well as possible future reactions between the user and a new medicine. I realized that it isn't super accessible to answer such questions for those who may find it difficult to navigate the internet and research, so I decided to make a website that makes it easy to find the answers to these questions in an accessible and simple way. This is also because researching it yourself usually gives the user a list of links rather than a straightforward response. If their Google Gemini is on, it sometimes doesn't give the user a simple response that is easy to understand. The Rx Responder makes it easier for users.
What it does
The Rx Responder is a website with two tabs, one including the interaction screener, and the other being the reaction check. In the interaction screener, it allows the user to enter two or more medicines and then see if they are safe to be taken together. This is often a common issue with over-the-counter medicines. In the other tab, it allows you to enter a medicine the user had a reaction to, the negative reaction the user had with it, and then a future medicine you will be taking. It checks if the user is high-risk of having a reaction to the future medicine, in a simple way.
How I built it
I built the Rx Responder by putting prompts into Claude and uploading code to StackBlitz. I had to continuously add and change Claude prompts to get the result I wanted. Later, for the official demo, I uploaded the Stackblitz to Netlify, which deployed the demo link. To upload to GitHub, I uploaded the StackBlitz code to GitHub.
Challenges I ran into
Many times, I entered a prompt to Claude, but it didn't give me the result I wanted. For example, while running tests for the interaction screener, it gave me poor low source information, which wouldn't be reliable for the user. I had to constantly change and add to my prompt to finally be able to add reliable sources to the product. Another example is when I was adding stylistic details, and my prompts kept resulting in boring colors, fonts, and designs, so I had to keep editing these. This was challenging because of the many attempts that it took to edit the code.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
I am proud that I was able to create such an accessible website where someone could easily just enter words and get a response in an instant, rather than surfing the web for hours just for a simple, reliable answer. I'm also proud that I was able to create and edit code with the help of Claude for the first time. I was able to articulate any issues that occurred within the code and fix them as well.
What I learned
I learned that creating an impactful website/app takes lots of time and effort with continuous editing and proofing. Initially, I thought my project wouldn't take a lot of time, since it was just "code," but I found out the hard way that these types of projects require attention for several hours. Just simple styling details can take three hours. I learned how to become more patient if any issues come up, since one single prompt isn't going to be right the first go.
What's next for The Rx Responder
The Rx Responder will be expanding its capabilities by possibly adding a voice tool, where those who have difficulty typing will be able to use their voice to ask questions and also navigate the website. This will expand the accessibility of the website. Additionally, I could include an AI tool for those who have any questions regarding their medicines. Many times, other AI tools aren't accurate with their answers regarding health, but this one will be, since it takes its information from reliable sources and just summarizes it. Additionally, it will also be adding more tabs to explore the science and meaning behind different interactions and reactions between medicines and one's body. It is for those who are interested in such, while also keeping it easy to understand.
