Inspiration
I wanted to give a revamp to the iconic Helicopter game from the 2000's, while developing my skills as a game developer. After further working on some of the its features and making it unique, I plan on uploading it to the Play Store for everyone to enjoy.
What it does
At its core, you control a rocket ship which must evade asteroids. You must get as far as you can.
How we built it
I built it using Unity, coding in a new-to-me C# language.
Challenges we ran into
I did not have enough time to fully develop it. In a perfect scenario, I would have created my own prefabs using Blender, had a working UI, kept track of the user's progress, and ended the game as I wanted it. The last one is a problem that I could not fix today, and I will continue working on it in the coming days.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I was able to code more-or-less a full game by myself, in a software and language very new to me, all in a day. I understand that lots of parts are missing and I will not win the Hackathon because I bit off more than I could chew with this (I was also out of ideas, so I decided to try something new with this Unity and game development idea), but in the process I accomplished more than I had throughout my whole summer break, and I am happy with the amount of knowledge I gained in the process.
What we learned
I learned how Unity works, how to code different types of games (benefits from watching endless Unity tutorials on YouTube), how C# works (and how to code what you want), as well as general Game Engine and game development knowledge.
What's next for The Rocket Game
I will continue working on it and developing more features for it. But first thing's first I will finish coding its barebones self. Then I will create my own prefabs using Blender. After implementing them, I will add coins that will keep track of players' progress, as well as making the game harder as the player gets further and further. After that, I might change it to have a set amount of fuel, and to have fuel canisters float around the screen which will add fuel to the rocket ship. All in all, this game is far from finished, but I am grateful for this hackathon for getting me off my butt and actually building something somewhat-functional.
