Inspiration
More and more tech companies are restricting their users and prioritizing other corporations or politicians. With the removal of the Youtube dislike button, users no longer have a good way to voice their opinion as comments can be purged. The dislike button was a great feature for identifying the quality of a video and I'd like to make an extension to Google Chrome in order to judge each video.
What it does
The project is a chrome extension where you can either search for videos, or it'll scan your page and bring up an information page which includes the video name, description, views, likes, a custom dislike button and the likeability of the video (likes per view) and the recent likeability of the channel (likes per total views over the last few videos).
How we built it
I used a react & redux frontend, with some common libraries and a nodeJS backend. The chrome API and Youtube Data API was used to gather data.
Challenges we ran into
I had some trouble implementing certain chrome extension features, such as creating cookies which I initially did in a background script but had trouble configuring it with my popups script because I needed to initialize the cookies on some base web page.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I got to work with some cool APIs and while I am familiar with React and NodeJS, I got to practice some more.
What we learned
I learned a lot about how to make chrome extensions but I do not feel that I explored my background & content scripts. I hope to go back and explore further.
What's next for The Right Opinion
The extension is free for anyone to use. I have yet to decide if I will host it on a platform.
