Inspiration
This project was inspired by the stories my grandmother shared about surviving the Asaba Massacre. In the final years of her life, she told these stories repeatedly—as though ensuring they would not be forgotten. Creating this documentary became a way for us to honor her memories and share the tragedy through the eyes of someone who lived it.
What it does
The Red Niger brings attention to a largely forgotten chapter of history. It highlights the human cost of conflict—the joy it steals, the futures it cuts short, and the communities it reshapes forever. Through personal storytelling, it preserves memories that might otherwise fade and reminds viewers of the devastating consequences of war.
How we built it
We began by developing a narrative structure that captured our vision. Using a combination of AI tools, we crafted the storyline, generated the visuals, and designed the audio and soundscape. All elements were then assembled and edited into a cohesive documentary using CapCut. The process was a blend of creativity, technology, and careful storytelling.
Challenges we ran into
We discovered the hackathon quite late and had less than a week to bring the entire project to life. Getting AI tools to accurately depict Nigerian settings and characters proved difficult, as the generated visuals were not always authentic. Additionally, unstable electricity slowed our workflow and added pressure to an already tight timeline. Despite these obstacles, we pushed through to complete the documentary.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that we completed a meaningful five-minute documentary within such a limited timeframe. The final result—especially the AI-generated visuals and narrative flow—was well-received by those who previewed it. Turning a deeply personal story into a polished documentary under intense time pressure is an achievement we value greatly.
What we learned
This project taught us the discipline of finishing creative work under pressure. We grew in our ability to collaborate effectively, refine our storytelling skills, and navigate the evolving landscape of AI-driven creative tools. The experience strengthened both our technical and narrative capabilities.
What's next for *The Red Niger*
We plan to take this momentum forward by developing longer, more ambitious projects that explore diverse themes using AI as a core part of our creative workflow. Ultimately, we aim to establish an AI-powered animation studio dedicated to bringing compelling African stories to life.
