Inspiration
I took inspiration from Baldi's Basics (even though it didn't really have anything to do with the game. My initial idea was to have three different ways to teach you. Through studying (visual), through fear / being chased (kinesthetic) and shapes / memory games (visual). However, with how long it took model and set up the rig, I had to scrap a bulk of my ideas.
What it does
It is supposed to be a cute and cozy way to study, especially when you don't have a friend near. It could also add a new study setting than where you were used to.
How we built it
So I had to initially set up the XR Rig with Unity which was quite a task. Setting up and modelling in blender took up a bulk of my time. My initial plan was to have the user feed the app a JSON file full of questions and answers for studying so Damien could "study" or "quiz" with you. However, I forgot with VR, how much time setting up the rig, interactables, graphics, etc was.
Challenges we ran into
VR is very challenging and annoying to deal with in Unity. With Unity's constant updates, and not enough videos and resources on AR / VR Development in Unity, it was really annoying setting up. I would get errors that contradicted each other, I would also have issues with physics a lot. Another thing was the various VR Headsets making it confusing to figure out what goes with which headset. I don't own my own headset, I borrowed it from a friend.
I also had a lot of issues with physics, ESPECIALLY the door. The door hinges were either too loose or too heavy and the axis' became difficult to deal with.
(I also wanted this to be a cozy cute study game but the amount of times I walked into the room to see Damien and the amount of jumpscares I had gotten because I forgot he was there.)
UPDATE: I almost cried because Unity didn't want to build my game for android, so I decided to build for desktop instead. Then BOTH github and itch.io decided to tag team me so that was cool. Anywas got it to upload, I haven't played it yet but if the ending is all black, it was supposed to be an AR game that went wrong :(.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am really proud of the numerous models I came out with. For doing a project on my own, it didn't end up how I wanted it to be, however I am happy with what I did come out with! :)
What we learned
I learned a lot about META VR & XR Development. I also have gotten quicker with 3D Modeling and figuring out how Unity works with VR Development
What's next for The Pup Quiz
I was planning on finishing with the rest of the model of the University, and making more educational themed games based of the school or other fun ways to learn things that may not be interesting to everyone. I also want to add more customization with the room, and finish the studying mechanic and other side games I initially wanted.
