Inspiration

With Alexa, it has been about companionship and friendship. She is a trusted resource, someone to talk to. We can teach her to help someone feel better, or to remind us of the good in this world. We are trying to always make tech interactions more human like and what better than to create something that emphasizes. This can especially help veterans, who have seen so much in life that sometimes, an outside reminder of the good things in life is needed.

What it does

My Voice Journal has the ability to draw on techniques from reminiscence therapy:

  • On good days, let veterans record how they’re feeling about something good that happened (positivity diary).
  • On the bad days, they now have a record of better times that they can listen to for encouragement.
  • Added daily wellness check-ins.

How we built it

We did the prototyping using Lucidchart and the designing using Botsociety.io. We will build the the final by using Amazon Skills Blueprints kit coding it in Python.

Challenges we ran into

  • We didn't have enough time to build the skill and test it
  • We had some connection issues, as our team members were across the country.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We made the designing and the prototyping. The next step will be to implement the skill by building the software with Python and the hardware as Alexa integration.

What we learned

  • How to collaborate as a team
  • How to build new Alexa Skill by using Amazon Blueprints in Node.js or Python
  • How to do research by brainstorming and coming up with an unique idea.

What's next for My Voice Journal

In the day and a half of Technica 2020, we only had time to build the idea with our mentor. Now, the actual implementation can happen! Once basic functionality is working, we could increase customization by making new prompts, and using AI/ML techniques.
