We were inspired to create this project because we both learned a lot about Blynk and IoT from the in-class labs. We wanted to create a project that combined IoT and different sensors, and settled on a moisture detection system for plants.
The Power Plant has multiple components. It contains an RTC, which keeps track of the time until the next watering. Red and green LEDs are there to show if the soil is above the threshold moisture. If the environment is not moist enough, the red LED will light up, and a buzzer will sound until the moisture level has been raised. Otherwise, the green LED is lit up. It also contains a DHT11 sensor that records the temperature and humidity of the plant. Temperature, humidity, moisture, and time until next watering are all reflected on the Blynk dashboard.
Some challenges we ran into were with building the circuit containing all the components. We had to restart multiple times and had to research how to wire the moisture sensor, which we had not previously worked with. Additionally, we could not show the plant losing moisture over the course of several days, so we had to set up a separate cup of water and wipe down the moisture sensor every time to prove that it could detect changes in moisture levels.
