Inspiration
My father always had this idea for a board game he wanted to make but had no idea how to replicate his vision into an actual product. He is a huge gamer, as am I, so when Meta released the Meta Quest 3 we ran to the store. It immediately lit a light bulb that this would be the perfect place to make a game like this come to life. When I saw Meta was hosting its Presence Platform Hackathon for mixed reality games it seemed perfect because this is exactly what we wanted to create, a mixed reality puzzle board game you could play with your friends virtually no matter where you are. Of course, I had to add a VR feature because it's just to cool to pass up!
What it does
It's a virtual puzzle board game. You connect with your friends online, take turns rolling your dice and moving your player spaces on the board. There are 6 hidden puzzles located around the board you need to get to and solve. The pyramid entrance will be locked until you have solved all 6 puzzles. Each puzzle awards you with a diamond. First one to make it to the entrance of the pyramid with all 6 diamonds wins all its treasure! It can be played in VR, fully immersed in the Sahara Desert, or in Mixed Reality with your friends as their Meta avatars and your virtual game board in your real physical living room.
How we built it
My father helped me with testing and all of the ideas, so it became a really fun bonding experience. I built the entire thing alone using unity and a lot of patience. lol.
Challenges we ran into
A big challenge was definitely the VR multiplayer testing. If my father wasn't available and I didn't have anyone around to throw on the second headset it was difficult to really test what was going on.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Completing our creation in such a time crunch! I had made a version of this game a while back to play on Tilt Five and PC but had to scratch the whole thing completely as it was just a completely different system, I had to use to make it work in VR and there were very different features we wanted to use. But we are very proud of how it turned out overall, we can't stop playing it!
What we learned
I learned a lot about working with Meta and all that they have to offer through their SDK's. I also learned an incredible amount about spatial computing and bringing in virtual objects into your physical space.
What's next for The Pharaoh's Labyrinth VR
Our dream would be to have it be available for people to purchase on the Meta Quest store! Having a game, we love and created available to so many people on a platform we admire so much would be out of this world.
