Inspiration
Many times I’ve gone to the fridge hungry, only to feel like there’s “nothing to eat.” Often, that ended in ordering fast food or Uber Eats. I realized this is a common problem: people overlook the ingredients they already have. PantryChef was inspired by the idea that with the right guidance, anyone can turn what’s in their pantry into a satisfying meal.
What it does
PantryChef lets users enter the ingredients they have at home, and AI generates tasty, step-by-step recipes using those items. The goal is to help people save money, reduce food waste, and avoid unnecessary takeout by showing them they already have the foundation for a good meal.
How we built it
We designed a clean, user-friendly interface that makes it quick to type in ingredients. We then connected this to an AI-powered backend that processes the ingredients and outputs structured recipes with cooking time, servings, and instructions. The focus was on making the experience simple, polished, and hackathon-ready.
Challenges we ran into
Time constraints: building something polished in just a few hours.
Deciding which features to focus on — we had to leave out the photo-based ingredient detection because it wasn’t reliable enough under time pressure.
Making sure the recipes generated were useful and realistic with minimal input.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Delivering a functional, professional-looking app under hackathon deadlines.
Creating a smooth ingredient-to-recipe flow that feels intuitive for users.
Building something that solves a real-world problem many people face daily.
What we learned
How to scope features quickly and focus on what delivers the most value.
The importance of UX design in making AI outputs feel approachable and helpful.
How to translate a common frustration into a product that feels impactful.
What's next for The PantryChef App
