Inspiration
The P3-180 Incident began as an origin story for Flourbert, one of the button-sized Crumbkin™ bakers in the Crumb Canvas™ universe. The concept of a tiny baker accidentally caught in industrial equipment created wonderful storytelling possibilities. The universal experience of being in over your head combined with the visual comedy potential of extreme scale differences was something I couldn't pass up.
What it does
When Junior Mixing Intern Flourbert™ volunteers to fill in for a sick colleague, he finds himself face-to-face with the industrial bakery's most intimidating piece of equipment: the P3-180 supermixer. What starts as an eager first day quickly becomes a whirlwind lesson in centrifugal force, professional determination, and the true meaning of "hands-on experience."
How we built it
- Image and Video: Midjourney was used to generate all images and most of the animation sequences. Hailuo 02 via KREA was used to animate select key frames.
- Audio: "La Nuit est Claire" (instrumental) by Retrophonic with licensed sound effects from Artlist.
- Voice: ElevenLabs Voice Design
- Editing: iMovie
- Workflow: Solo production combining AI-generated visual assets with traditional filmmaking techniques
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was purely narrative; explaining how the P3-180 mixer gets switched on accidentally in a way that felt both believable and visually compelling. The solution became the overly dramatic silhouette sequence of the apprentice slipping in glaze with a chain reaction of desperate balance attempts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This entire project, from concept to final edit, was conceived, written, storyboarded, generated, and completed in a weekend using accessible AI tools. I'm also proud of Flourbert as a character. Creating someone precocious and engaging without dialogue required trusting that the narrative, visual expression and body language could carry emotional weight. He works because the animation fundamentals of anticipation, follow-through, exaggeration are doing the storytelling work.
What we learned
The most significant creative decision was choosing not to give Flourbert™ a speaking voice. While the narrator provides story context, Flourbert himself remains silent throughout his ordeal, communicating instead through visual expression and body language. It allows the imagination to engage with the story more than if Flourbert had a speaking part. Without dialogue, the audience engages more actively with Flourbert's emotional journey, projecting their own internal monologue onto his expressions and actions.
What's next for The P3-180 Incident
Crumbkins™ are a central part of the Crumb Canvas™ storytelling universe, so Flourbert is certain to find himself in more trouble. Crumbkins™, operate in the background of the larger Canvas world, running everything from real estate ventures to therapeutic services for emotionally-aware baked goods. Mischief is inevitable.
