While the brunt of India’s second coronavirus wave has passed, its repercussions on COVID deaths have further uncovered the country’s insufficient healthcare infrastructure. From this surge in COVID cases emerged the heightened oxygen crisis in India. At the root of this shortage lie maldistribution problems, such as logistical complications and delayed compliance, that aggravate the resource’s convoluted supply chain. Despite the gravity of India’s oxygen crisis, government response was inadequate and ultimately failed to measure up to the issue’s magnitude of urgency.

In order to avert similar crises from occurring in the future, especially given the possibility of a third wave in India, actionable policy must substitute the current temporary responses in place.

The Breathe India Policy will provide a sustainable, multi-pronged solution through the creation of a central oxygen task force and the provision of various logistical mechanisms that will streamline the oxygen supply chain in India.
