Inspiration
Our insperation was to pair up 3D scanning with the Waterstons challenge of accessibility. We wanted to enable more to access the joys of the Hackerthon who may be unable due to a variety of reasons: Disability and travel accessibility come to mind.
What it does
Our program is an immersive virtual tour of the hackthon for those who are unable to attend in person. We've used polycam to load in the environment of the hackathon and then we used Unity to create the interactions. So far it: Has an environment, Has a 1st person avatar, Gravity and has a welcoming text.
How we built it
As mentioned earilier we used polycam for the environment creation. And then we used C sharp in Unity to make the actual immersive program.
Challenges we ran into
No one in our team has prior experience of C# so learning it was a steep learning curve but enjoyable. Not every member has their own laptop and not every member has the same operating system. The OS was problematic for polycam as it is unavailable for android devices.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
All members have got involved with C# and managed to help program basic interactions between an avatar and an external environment. We have managed to make a 3D model of the TLC
What we learned
All members have learnt C# and how to use polycam to produce 3D models
What's next for The Official Durhack Tour
2024 Offical tour, but seriously there is an exponential growth for this idea. For example we would next add the sponsors and interact with them, Other interactions with hackers to add to the hacker experience and finally to intergrate the hackathons themes and goals. For exmaple adding mega teams or points to the users screen.
