Inspiration

We were inspired by how people handle uncertainty in life. Sometimes safety feels comfortable, but real growth only comes when you are willing to face risk. We wanted to capture that tension in a game, turning a maze into more than a puzzle, into a reflection of persistence, choice, and the courage to go further than feels safe.

What it does

The Wager challenges players to escape a maze where the exit is never still. Along the way, players manage their hearts, deciding whether to renew them or press forward under pressure. Each decision carries meaning, teaching perseverance and calculated risk-taking in an abstract, atmospheric way.

How we built it

We built The Wager using Kiro. The core design combines procedural maze generation with a moving exit system to ensure each playthrough feels alive. The heart mechanic was layered on to increase stakes, creating moments of decision that keep players engaged. Visual design choices, glowing obelisks, shifting mazes, and dark atmospheres, were made to reinforce the story of risk and reward.

Challenges we ran into

One of the hardest challenges was balance. If the game was too harsh, it felt punishing. If it was too soft, the meaning of choice disappeared. Another challenge was ensuring the moving exit never felt random, but instead like part of the story the maze was telling each time you entered it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that The Wager makes players reflect as much as it entertains. It’s more than escaping a maze, it’s about how you approach uncertainty and what you decide to risk along the way. Watching players discover their own strategies and reactions was one of the most rewarding parts of building it.

What we learned

We learned how powerful subtle mechanics can be when they are tied to story. Even a small decision about when to renew a heart can change how players feel about their run. We also learned the importance of iteration, each round of testing taught us something new about pacing, tension, and how to keep players immersed.

What's next for The Wager

Next, we want to expand the game with more maze variations, richer atmospheres, and new mechanics that deepen the sense of risk and discovery. The goal is to keep every session fresh and personal, so that no two players ever experience The Wager the same way.
