Inspiration
The main inspiration for this project is different concepts of a moon god in different cultures - from Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto to the myth of Selena and Endymion - viewed through modern lenses to achieve the air of divinity through quite human clothing.
Moon is not only about something sanctified: it's also commonly associated with omens and malice, so on top of everything else, we decided to add horns, which are suspiciously rejected from the user's point of view - as if a child tries to cross out unsatisfying part of their drawing.
And, of course, a bodysuit made of white stones represents the real moon's nature.
What it does
We transform users into the moon deity through fashionable, though rather unrealistic, clothing consisting of two pauldrons, two fabric trails, a moonflower, a bracelet, a crescent moon, and two white horns. All objects should feel physical and ethereal, so the user can turn into a totally different, mysterious creature while using our AR effect.
The effect can be used over real human clothing.
How we built it
One of the most important details to us was the surfaces - of the pauldrons, the crescent moon, the fabric, their almost hyperrealistic gloss, and shine, and the reflections in them - since the moon is commonly associated with mirrors and everything reflective in general (like water, for example). That's why it was important to us to create "a divine aura" and "an unholy feel" the red moon gives us, as the effect of pauldrons and bracelets being thoroughly polished.
Challenges we ran into
AR body tracking is no perfect technology, so we naturally ran into problems with our hands. Thanks to the initial concept, working with an issue without the sleeves was easier.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team produced an interesting conceptual design, though far from perfect - and we almost perfectly incorporated it into the final product.
What we learned
This project deepened our understanding of how to work with concept art and fashion design, especially in the context of AR.
