Inspiration

Students generally take about 10 - 15 courses per year and require textbooks and other reading resources for each course. Most textbooks cost in the 3 figure range which contributes to the "bills" students pay (considering most students have low disposable income). Some student work part-time and sometimes delay graduating to earn enough to be able to afford the other expenses of an academic term. Others opt for illegal methods to acquire the textbooks they need. Education should not be expensive, this is why The Market Place provides a better alternative of a low cost, legal way to acquire textbooks.

What it does

The Market Place is a web application that allows students to buy and sell used textbooks amongst themselves, with the growth potential to sell other used items, such as, furnitures and appliances.

How we built it

The frontend of the application was built on React and the backend was build on Node.js.

Challenges we ran into

Trying to prioritize features, considering its a one person team

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Completed the MVP, with features fully functioning (backend and frontend)
  • The UI/UX of the application

What we learned

  • It is possible to build a fully functioning MVP in 3 days (just gotta eat out a lot)
  • How to use fire base authentication in web applications

What's next for The Market Place

  • Selling other items, such as furnitures and appliances
  • Personalized experience: Users specify tags in settings which would affect the results displayed in the Market section
  • Notification center to be able to track purchases in real-time
