Inspiration
Krampus has stolen the magic of christmas, inspired by the BCS. We wanted to combine a horror style game with the theming of magic, and thought it was appropriate to get into the Christmas spirit.
What it does
You play as Santa's elf, trying to free all of the captured elves whilst being chased by Krampus, powered by a smart AI script which can be unpredictable and challenging to encounter & escape from. The visuals have a dark, horror but also slightly cosy vibe. Other mechanics include multiple Christmas magic powers to help you against Krampus, hiding in lockers and fully animated characters. The terrain is fully modelled by us, along with some (but not all) of the assets.
How we built it
We split our workload across the 24 hours. The game is built on the Unity High Definition Render Pipeline. Some of the assets were modelled, rigged and textured in Cinema 4D whilst others are taken off Mixamo, Sketchfab and the Unity Asset Store. All models were animated by us and all of the code is done by us. We used 11 Labs for AI voice lines and the intro video was done using Gemini with inspiration from our own 3D model.
Challenges we ran into
Some models which we made by ourselves had to be scrapped, and the higher detail textures from Cinema 4D didn't import properly into Unity. We also had some challenges with animation which we overcame and the usual coding bugs which we hopefully managed to fix.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The visuals of the game look very good, the enemy AI turned out better than expected and we are exceptionally proud of the Santa 3D model in the main menu which we made. We also didn't lose 16 hours of work like last year with proper project management and planning which is a bonus.
What we learned
We learned lots of new skills covering the full game making workflow like animating, modelling, cut scenes (hopefully we have enough time to add them in the end) and coding.
What's next for The Magic of Christmas
