Inspiration: A Less Explored Area of Climate Change

Sure, we've learned about forest fires, hurricanes, droughts, and other extreme weathers exacerbated by global warming. Unfortunately for us, we never dived deep into learning about the effects of climate change in the ocean, the body of water that covers over 70% of our Earth. It is easy to stay ignorant of this growing problem until it actually becomes of consequence to us.

Introduction to the School of Ocean Acidification

Our website includes games to inform users about the growing threat that ocean acidification poses to the world, and what they can do to help.

Learning in school can be a nuisance and it could be hard to retain important information such as ocean acidification, but temperatures and the amount of CO2 are reaching record levels. Glaciers are melting and ecosystems are being destroyed.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that we need to protect our Earth and attain Goal 14 of the 17 UN Sustainable goals: to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. Mitigating ocean acidification is one big step we could do to reach this goal and this starts with educating people.

How we built it

Using Glitch.com, we coded our website with HTML, CSS, and Javascript pages. HTML gave our website a base. Javascript allowed us to make buttons and quizzes. Then CSS gave our website its design.

Challenges we ran into

  • Getting started: What should we make with the skills, resources, and time we have? A simple brainstorming session helped us come up with our project.
  • Design flaws: Our website lacked the right colors and overall feel. Through a series of trial and error, we found a design that matches our preferences.
  • Making the website user-friendly: It took many changes in our CSS and Javascript to finally make our website responsive.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that all of our hard work has shown in our project because we have successfully made our website interactive and fun while also being user-friendly. We enjoy the design of our website.

What we learned

This is our first hackathon, and we didn't know much about how to start, what to make and how to build a project, but we’ve come to understand the process. This is our first time using Javascript. Now we know how to make a responsive website with a quiz!

Not to mention, we also learned how to submit a project on Devpost and record a video on a shared screen in zoom.

What's next for School of Ocean Acidification

  • Adding more games such as crosswords, fill-in puzzles, drag, and drop games, etc.
  • Adding new and more information about ocean acidification!
  • Creating a login/sign-in process to allow users to save their progress and compare their results with others.
  • Partnering with industry leaders to expose this platform to more people.
