Inspiration
We wanted to reimagine the iconic detective Byomkesh Bakshi in a completely new way — through the aesthetic of 2D anime noir fused with musical storytelling. The idea of uncovering clues through music instead of dialogue felt fresh, emotional, and visually powerful. We were inspired by classic noir films, Indian detective literature, and the expressive dynamism of Japanese anime.
What it does
Byomkesh Bakshi: The Shadow Notes is a 4–5 minute 2D anime investigative thriller musical drama short film, created entirely using Minimax’s Halio video model.
The film follows Byomkesh as he unravels a mysterious melody echoing through a deserted music academy. With no spoken dialogue, the entire investigation is driven by:
Visual clues
Musical motifs
Noir atmosphere
Emotional pacing
The result is a cinematic, gripping story told purely through music, ambience, and expressive animation.
How we built it
We built the entire film exclusively using Minimax’s Halio video model.
Our Process
The screenplay was broken into 6-second segments to maintain scene coherence.
Each shot was generated using Halio’s 2D anime capabilities.
Character designs (Byomkesh, the suspect, the music teacher) were built using consistent prompt templates.
Halio was used to extend sequences, refine transitions, and maintain visual continuity.
Background ambience, environmental effects, and musical tonal cues were also produced using Minimax’s audio capabilities.
The full sequence was assembled, timed, and structured into a complete 4–5 minute narrative.
Visual Style Achieved with Minimax
Soft-grain 2D anime look
Noir contrast: rain, shadows, warm lamps
Dynamic movement: chases, clues, flashes
Expressive facial animation for deduction scenes
Everything — visuals, ambience, transitions, sequences, pacing — was generated using Minimax only.
Challenges we ran into
Maintaining perfect character consistency across 45+ anime shots required multiple prompt refinements.
Noir lighting in 2D anime sometimes confused the model, producing either too much shadow or too much glow.
Generating musical investigation cues without traditional dialogue required careful control over ambience and pacing.
Balance between cinematic movement and stable animation was tricky in fast chase sequences.
Ensuring smooth transitions in a model designed for short clips meant relying on segmentation + continuity prompts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created a fully AI-generated 2D anime detective film using Minimax alone.
Achieved consistent anime character design for Byomkesh throughout the entire runtime.
Developed a compelling musical investigation narrative without speaking or narration.
Successfully used Minimax to produce atmospheric rain, noir lighting, expressive eyes, and emotional framing.
Managed to create a festival-ready film with entirely AI-driven processes.
What we learned
How to maximize the power of Minimax Halio to produce long-form storytelling.
The importance of crafting shot-level prompts for stable character animation.
Techniques for blending musical cues and visual clues to replace dialogue.
How to keep continuity in anime-style scenes using segmentation and carefully repeated prompt anchors.
That AI video models can create expressive, emotionally driven cinema when used with structure and direction.
What's next for Byomkesh Bakshi: The Shadow Notes
Expanding the concept into a multi-episode anime-style Byomkesh mini-series created completely in Minimax.
Creating higher-frame-quality versions of key scenes using refined prompts.
Developing a dedicated Minimax style guide for Indian noir anime characters.
Adding alternate cuts like:
Noir black-and-white edition
Music-only director’s cut
Continuing to explore how Minimax can support long-form fiction in a fully AI-driven pipeline.
Submitting the short to the Chroma Awards and other mystery/animation festivals.
