Inspiration

The Legend of Danau Toba is one of the most iconic and emotional folktales from Indonesia—something I grew up hearing since childhood. I’ve always wanted to show this story to a global audience, but with a modern cinematic approach. AI finally gave me the tools to transform this ancient myth into a visual experience: atmospheric, emotional, and deeply cultural. This project was inspired by the desire to preserve folklore while reimagining it through the lens of new technology.

What it does

This project retells the Legend of Danau Toba as a short cinematic AI film. It blends:

AI-generated landscapes, characters, and scenes

Cinematic camera motion

Emotional visual storytelling

Minimal narration and expressive atmosphere

The film brings the myth to life—showing the love, conflict, transformation, and the birth of the legendary lake in a modern, immersive format.

How we built it

The entire project was built fully inside CapCut, using:

CapCut Image Generator to create characters, landscapes, dramatic moments, and folklore scenes.

CapCut Video Generator to produce cinematic camera movement, animated sequences, and dynamic storytelling shots.

CapCut Editing Tools for sequencing, transitions, pacing, sound design, color grading, and assembling the narrative.

All visuals, animations, and final editing were done within CapCut. No external 3D software, stock footage, or additional AI tools were used.

Challenges we ran into

Maintaining character consistency between AI-generated shots.

Controlling visual style across multiple scenes produced by different AI generators.

Time constraints, especially generating multiple variants until the emotional tone felt right.

Directing emotion with minimal dialogue, relying mainly on visual storytelling.

Balancing realism with mythology, ensuring the supernatural elements still feel grounded.

These challenges shaped the project into a more expressive and disciplined AI film.

Next, I plan to:

Expand the film into a longer version exploring more details of the myth.

Create a series of AI films based on Indonesian folktales.

Experiment further with CapCut AI tools to push visual storytelling even more.

Combine AI-generated scenes with voice acting and music for deeper emotional impact.

Continue using AI to bring Indonesian cultural stories to global audiences.
