The Legacy Book

Inspiration

The Legacy Book began as a simple idea: what does it mean to preserve a life, a memory, a family recipe? In a world where moments fade and generations drift apart, this story explores the quiet ways love and legacy are passed down.

What it does

It captures the intimacy and emotion of human connection, highlighting universal themes of memory, family, and the enduring bonds between parent and child. My hope is that audiences leave reflecting on their own stories and the legacies they wish to leave behind.

How it is built

After developing the concept through brainstorming, I wrote the full script and created a storyboard to map out the emotional flow of the film. Using this as a guide, I generated the visual assets with AI image models. These images were then fed into AI video tools to animate the scenes. The resulting clips were refined and stitched together in CapCut, where I also incorporated music and foley effects from its library. All dialogue and subtitles were produced using ElevenLabs, completing the film’s audio narrative layer.

Challenges

Character consistency was difficult to maintain across scenes, especially when depicting subtle expressions tied to dementia. AI’s tendency to alter character details between renders — from clothing to facial structure — makes continuity challenging. I also had to ensure the photorealistic AI visuals remained believable and emotionally aligned with a heartfelt father–son story. Achieving smooth transitions, natural gestures, and coherent backgrounds required extensive regeneration, manual correction, and precise editing. Since the story relies on subtle emotional beats, especially the hawker’s diminishing mind and gentle nods, many frames had to be regenerated and refined to achieve believable expressions. Integrating these visuals with audio, subtitles, and pacing demanded careful craftsmanship.

Accomplishments

Succeeded in crafting a cohesive and emotionally grounded narrative whilst maintaining consistent character identity across scenes, allowing the hawker’s journey to feel authentic. The film achieved a balance between photorealistic AI visuals and the warmth of a human story, creating a tone that feels natural yet sincere. I’m glad that the subtle emotional beats — his nods, fading clarity, and moments of vulnerability — were preserved through careful regeneration and editing. Bringing together AI-generated visuals, handcrafted pacing, and a meaningful father–son arc proved that intimate storytelling is possible even without an expensive cast, crew, or sets.

What is learned

Importance of precision, patience, and iterative refinement. Emotional storytelling still relies heavily on human intuition — AI can generate frames, but shaping meaning, rhythm, and subtlety requires a human hand. Pre-production is still important: script, reference boards, consistent prompts, and clear emotional direction helped stabilize outputs and maintain continuity. AI is a powerful creative partner, but only when guided with intention, restraint, and careful craftsmanship.

What's next for The Legacy Book

Expansion into a small series exploring legacy, memory, and family bonds through similarly photorealistic AI-driven storytelling. In fact, the next episode on the Legacy Project's other formats — video and audio — is already completed. Ultimately, this project opens the door to creating intimate, cinematic stories on a scale that was once impossible without cast, crew, budget, or locations, and I look forward to exploring where that possibility leads.
