The LeftoversMeet

Inspiration

The Leftoversmith was inspired by the ever-present struggle against food waste. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), globally, around one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted each year. This statistic, coupled with the desire to be more resourceful in the kitchen, sparked the idea for an AI-powered recipe generator that could transform forgotten ingredients into delicious meals. This eliminates the 'what-to-cook-with-leftovers' dilemma, allowing users to discover exciting new recipes.

What it does

LeftoversMeet is the perfect solution for individuals like myself who struggle with predicting portion sizes, often resulting in cooking excess food. This tendency can lead to food waste, but with leftovers, there's an opportunity to create delicious meals. The app helps reduce waste by generating new recipes tailored to the ingredients already available. Whether it's breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks, LeftoversMeet provides options. Users can specify dietary preferences, including vegetarian choices, ensuring recipe suggestions align with their needs.

How we built it

This app was built on the AWS - PartyRock platform by utilizing widgets specifically tailored for taking input from users and generating recipes for them.

Challenges we ran into

Beforehand, getting everything to function smoothly was quite challenging, particularly in terms of generating recipes accurately from the prompts and ensuring their relevance. Additionally, achieving this level of precision was daunting. However, as I engaged in conversations with more chefs and individuals, everything began to fall into place seamlessly. Through these interactions, I gained valuable insights and feedback, enabling me to refine the app's functionality to perfection.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The LeftoversMeet app will soon be utilized in the expanding restaurant chain Let's Eat, assisting chefs in managing leftovers. A special menu will be curated featuring recipes generated using this app on designated days.

What we learned

The development of the LeftoversMeet app not only offers a practical solution to reducing food waste and promoting creativity in reusing leftovers but also unveils broader insights. By harnessing technology to facilitate recipe generation based on available ingredients, the app contributes to alleviating hunger and promoting food security on a larger scale. Moreover, it fosters culinary innovation by encouraging users to experiment with diverse ingredients, while also serving as an educational platform for sustainable food practices and nutrition.
