Inspiration

The Learning Star is inspired from Junior College mentor-mentee projects. We want to bring this idea online and allow users to connect easily with peers, as well as enhance effectiveness through polls and trivia quizzes, improving the learning process.

What it does

We pair tutors and tutees, allowing people to find tutors who are suitable and create a classroom. There, tutors can set up quizzes and polls and also communicate with the tutees through a chat box. There is a point system incentive, allowing users to gain points for correct answers.

There is also a canteen for people to virtually discuss their student life and questions about the app.

This makes learning safe, as well as more effective through interactive quizzes to encourage spontaneity. It is an exciting new method to allow online tutoring, compared to the standard method of feeding information and answering questions. It enhances effectiveness by combatting the effects of COVID-19 on mental health during HBL, by pairing students with a real person to learn.

How we built it

We worked on the django fullstack framework, with a backend that utilises data generated from users to pair each other up. We have an intensive backend that ensures data works together and to create concentrated chatboxes with a secure encryption key that prevents any two classrooms from mixing.

We utilised Django's RESTful API to build a secure backend, as well as generate crypto keys to keep conversations secure. The robust fullstack framework allows a well rounded application.

Challenges we ran into

As we are a team of NSFs, we were slightly late due to our late bookout timing. We however still gave our all and are proud of ourselves. The code may be buggy but most of the features work well.

What we learned

That we could start at 8pm and still finish a product that we were very proud of in the end. Thanks to the admins for understanding our situation and allowing us to submit later.

What's next for The Learning Star

We have a business model, with a calculate profit margin of $45 a day, earnt via a subscription program on registration. We will build an improved interface, and a virtual classroom that characters can move around, to enhance interaction.
