Inspiration
The Last Tape was born from my fascination with analog technology, especially VHS tapes. Growing up, they felt both intimate and fragile... carrying our memories while warping them with each replay. That distortion inspired me to imagine a story where memory itself becomes unstable, where nostalgia doesn’t comfort but threatens to consume.
What it does
The film tells the story of Rebecca, who returns to her childhood home with a single VHS tape. When she presses play, familiar images of her past unravel into something darker... blurring the line between memory and nightmare. The Last Tape uses the lo-fi texture of VHS horror to explore grief, trauma, and how the ghosts we carry live not only in the places we’ve left behind, but in the images we replay until they overwhelm us.
How we built it
The project was constructed with intentional minimalism — one actor, one location, and a single haunting object. I knew the limits of the AI models but wanted to push them... especially toward consistency of character. So I used ChatGPT to create still frames and then animated those frames in Kling.
I wanted to avoid dialogue since I don't like how models sync sound currently, I decided to use voice over via ElevenLabs. It sets the stage, sounds great, and didn't have to worry about the roll of the dice from something like VEO3.
Challenges we ran into
Like I mentioned, currently AI models are such a roll of the dice. The "actor" was like trying to give directions to a puppy. Sometimes it did what you wanted, mostly not. All ending up with hilarious results.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
I’m proud that The Last Tape creates atmosphere and consistency. The film doesn’t rely on jump scares, but on mood, silence, and texture. And I felt the emotions of Rebecca. I even loved leaning into the oddity of AI and how unsettling it can be.
Ultimately, I’m proud that the film resonates emotionally, not just visually — that audiences feel Rebecca’s grief as much as they feel her fear.
What we learned
AI filmmaking is just as hard as real filmmaking. But the joy is in the creating and finding a way to craft intention with the characters. Even if they're not real.
What’s next for The Last Tape
The short is just the beginning. I see The Last Tape as part of a larger exploration into analog horror, memory, and the infinite unknown. I plan to expand its world into a series. What happened to Rebecca? How will her brother react to the disappearance? Why did this happen to her? Where does the last tape lead?
I will continues submitting for festival screenings , but the long-term vision is to build toward a feature-length film that expands on these themes and characters while continuing the path toward AI storytelling.
