Inspiration

I have used dice to break decision deadlocks for years. The useful part was never the random answer itself. It was the immediate feeling after the die landed—relief, disappointment, anxiety, or the urge to roll again. That reaction often said more than another pros-and-cons list.

What it does

The Last Reroll turns that small ritual into a one-minute web experience:

  1. Write the decision and two to six possible options.
  2. Roll an animated six-sided die.
  3. Capture the first reaction before rationalizing it.
  4. Receive a concise reflection and a reversible 24-hour experiment.
  5. Share a lightweight “fate receipt” if desired.

It is not advice or prophecy. The dice interrupts rumination; the user's reaction is the signal.

How I built it

The app is a responsive React and TypeScript experience deployed with OpenAI Sites. The complete interaction runs in the browser: no account is required, and private decision text is not sent to a server. The result mapping, reaction flow, reduced-motion support, sharing behavior, and product-specific rendering tests are all included in the repository.

I built the project in Codex with GPT-5.6. Codex helped turn the original “decide by dice” idea into a clearer product loop, implement the interface and animation, replace starter checks with product tests, document the safety boundary, and deploy the working site. GPT-5.6 was especially useful in challenging the initial framing: the key product decision was that randomness should reveal a preference, not pretend to make an authoritative decision.

Challenges

The main challenge was keeping the product simple without making it a novelty random-number generator. The reaction step and reversible next action create the real value. I also deliberately avoided adding a login, database, or unnecessary AI call so a sensitive dilemma stays on the user's device.

What I am proud of

The full experience takes about one minute, works on mobile, requires no setup, and has a memorable demo loop. It is small enough to understand immediately but complete enough to use.

What is next

A future optional AI layer could help turn a messy dilemma into fair, non-overlapping options and flag high-stakes decisions that should not be left to chance. The deterministic, private core will remain usable without AI or an API key.
