Inspiration
The Lake was inspired by the imbalance we witness in today’s society — the distortion of gender dynamics, the suffering of women in patriarchal systems, and the way foreign cultural influences can overwrite or corrupt harmonious ancestral traditions. The story uses the lake as a metaphor for societies that once lived in balance, now destabilized by an external poison.
What it does
The film tells the story of a peaceful aquatic world where males and females lived in harmony… until a black poison begins spreading through the lake. This poison represents exogenous cultures and traditions that infiltrate and disrupt long-standing endogenous systems rooted in respect, balance, and reciprocity. Through animation, the film mirrors how patriarchal norms reshape relationships, often to the detriment of women.
How we built it
We created the project using stylized AI animation, symbolic fish designs, and underwater environments crafted to feel emotional and alive. The poison was visualized as a dark veil creeping through the water — subtle, invasive, and transformative. The hero’s descent into the depths becomes a journey back to old knowledge, untouched by external influence.
Challenges we ran into
Translating complex social issues like patriarchy and cultural colonization into an animal-based narrative, maintaining clarity without being literal, and ensuring the metaphor remained universal yet emotionally sharp were key challenges.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
We succeeded in turning a simple animated fable into a powerful reflection of societal imbalance. We illustrated how external traditions can corrupt harmonious systems, and how healing requires returning to ancestral wisdom. The story remains accessible while carrying deep social and philosophical weight.
What we learned
We learned how to use metaphor as a bridge between storytelling and social commentary, how to portray patriarchy without human characters, and how to show the fragility of harmony when external ideologies infiltrate and dominate.
What's next for The Lake
Expanding the universe to explore the origins of the poison, introducing ancient feminine guardians, and developing a series that teaches the restoration of balance — both between masculine and feminine energies, and between cultural identity and external influence.
