Inspiration
Gamers can spend thousands of hours playing multiplayer video games and still not make any lasting friends. Games are already a perfect environment for quality time. What if there was a platform that made it easy to make a new group of friends while playing the games you already know?
What it does
Uses the games you play and the hobbies you are interested in to match you with a group of people with similar hobbies to yours, but since you aren't actually told what hobbies you have in common, you are encouraged to genuinely talk to each other and connect. Matching profiles that give you all the details about a person before you get the chance to talk to them feels artificial, and also removes the chance for users to personally share that information to others.
How we built it
We used agentic workflows to build a react native frontend and a Supabase backend. We made sure to have a spec that was a sort of source of truth for the agents. We leveraged Supabase's powerful edge functions and real-time database tools to
Challenges we ran into
Time management and task delegation were big ones. Some of us were more experienced with frontend -- some of us were more experienced with backend, and we hadn't talked to each other about our skills and preferred development languages/frameworks beforehand. Additionally, we really wanted to make sure that we addressed the issue properly and with the right level of care required.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Pushing a working demo, particularly the matchmaking system. We found that the site looks and feels intuitive, while still staying true to our vision. The stack we used was intentional, and was based on what we needed to implement, alongside the tools we knew our stack provided. Our stack choice allowed us to seamlessly create meaningful features we felt good about.
What we learned
A lot of the research that went into addressing the poignant issue at the heart of our product. We wanted to keep things feeling intimate and real, while still keeping it stylish and efficient. Additionally, we learned a lot about working as a team. We're all relatively inexperienced developers, so this opportunity to work in a real team, and collaborate on a stack, was incredibly valuable to all of us.
What's next for The Internet Cafe
Polishing the site, and pushing to a domain. We're excited to work on it further.
