The impact of COVID-19 and lockdown on firm-level variables: a difference-in-differences comparison of Sweden and Norway.

Inspiration

The clock struck midnight and I jerked awake from my sleep (who am I kidding, third-year uni students aren't asleep at 12AM lol) with an interesting idea I wanted to explore. I decided that sleep was important (for the not-weakened by the Data Science 'Weakened') so grabbed a couple of hours, then went 'full steam ahead' on this project until the submission deadline.

Outcome

It's an 11-page report, complete with an appendix and bibliography. It took me a total of approx. 7 hours to complete this project, including data analysis, producing the report, etc. (5AM to 2PM with breaks in between...a little like LSE 24-hour exams. Hmm. Déjà vu.)

Process

I used Stata to clean the dataset and LaTeX (Overleaf) to produce the report.

Challenges

The dataset I used has its limitations, which I address in my report. (Also, sleep deprivation.)

Accomplishments

I managed to get something done for the Datathon!

What I learned

Whether parallel trends assumptions hold or not can have a great influence on your sense of self-worth when using DiD as an identification strategy.
