Inspiration
During the initial meeting, we discussed how the pandemic and working from home has affected our lives. A majority of us agreed that being isolated from others at home made us feel disconnected from reality. We read that journaling can be a medium through which people feeling isolation can heal. Because of that, we decided that we wanted to write a journaling web application that caters towards people feeling disconnected.
What it does
Our app allows users to create an account and creates posts that will be displayed on the homepage. This can be used as a form of reflection, which definitely helps with the anxiety and disconnect associated with working from home.
How I built it
We built it using a web framework known as Flask. For user authentication, we used a library that comes with flask called flask-login and wt-forms. To handle storing data, we opted to use a light-weight database, SQLite.
Challenges I ran into
Time constraint was definitely a problem that we ran into. Since this is our first time working with web development, we found ourselves stuck in a lot of places. This was also our first time using a library like Flask, so we had to consult various resources that delayed production further.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We're proud that despite these setbacks, we still managed to produce a web application that has some of the core functionalities that we wanted. Unfortunately, some of the features we had planned could not make it to the product due to time constraints. We believe that given more time, we could create The Hustler that we all were aiming for.
What I learned
Our group learned a lot about web development. Particularly, the people in charge of the backend learned a lot about how servers interact with programs, and how we can integrate databases into a web application as well. For the people in charge of the frontend, they learned a lot about javascript, html and css. We learned how these different languages and markup languages interact with one another to create a whole program, despite each part being very small. We also learned how to use github to organise a coding project.
What's next for The Hustler
We'd like keep running the application on heroku for a while, at least until the intended final product gets produced. Perhaps in the future we may build a better version, as we are equipped with better knowledge of web frameworks and databases.
