Inspiration

Unlike traditional apps that lock you into a narrow, hyper-localized feed, Hotspot broadens your perspective. We eliminate algorithmic biases by giving you access to news beyond your immediate surroundings, letting you explore stories from across the globe. Curious about the latest trends in New York? Want to know what’s happening in tech hubs like Silicon Valley or the local events in Austin? With Hotspot, the world is at your fingertips.

What it does

Discover the world, one story at a time with Hotspot! Our app brings you the latest news, live events and streams, and safety notifications, all centered around locations. Whether it’s your state, your city, or anywhere else in the world, you can explore a dynamic map interface to uncover what's happening in real-time. We eliminate bias by stepping away from hyper-localized feeds, giving you the freedom to explore stories from any region and stay in the loop with the latest trends and events everywhere. Hotspot is your window to a more connected and unbiased world. We allow users to filter by topic such as Travel, Sports, Politics, and Tech news.

How we built it

We built HotSpot as a full-stack application using React for the front-end and Firebase for the database. The map interface was implemented using a Google Maps API and Google Places API, allowing users to interactively explore different regions. We integrated the Perigon News API to pull in real-time, location-based news articles and safety updates from any point in the world. The app's design focused on delivering a clean, user-friendly experience, ensuring seamless navigation between the map and the news content.

Challenges we ran into

One of the most significant challenges was implementing a dynamic map interface. Handling the layering of UI elements on top of the map while ensuring responsiveness and interactivity led to several bugs that required creative problem-solving. Additionally, connecting the Perigon news API to display only relevant information for each location was complex, as we had to filter and map the data effectively. Balancing functionality with performance also posed a challenge, especially when rendering large amounts of data without overwhelming the user.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of developing a fully functional, interactive app with real-world applications. HotSpot allows users to explore communities, stay informed while traveling, and discover new areas when relocating or simply staying curious. Successfully integrating the Perigon news API with our UI and achieving a polished map interface were significant accomplishments. Creating a tool with the potential to connect people across regions and foster a broader understanding of communities is something we’re particularly excited about.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained valuable experience in building location-based applications and integrating third-party APIs into our design. We learned how to troubleshoot and resolve challenges related to UI layering, API data handling, and map interactivity. Additionally, we deepened our understanding of user experience design and how to make an app both functional and visually appealing.

What's next for The HotSpot - News Network

Looking ahead, we aim to expand HotSpot by incorporating live, upcoming events in addition to news and safety updates. We also plan to enhance the user interface with interactive animations to make the app more engaging and enjoyable to use. Long-term, we envision adding community-driven features, such as localized forums or user-submitted events, and improving personalization options while maintaining the app's unbiased exploration focus.
