Inspiration
The COVID-19 pandemic is still a relevant topic today, it is showing no signs of disappearing. Despite 95% of the population being double vaccinated, it is still important to not catch COVID as there is strong evidence stating COVID has long-term health consequences. Now without Victoria publishing the locations of exposure sites, it is near impossible to find out whether or not the place you are traveling to has a history of COVID.
What it does
Traveling to your grandmother's place, but do not want to catch COVID? Introducing The Hotspot Doc, a community driven website featuring self-reported locations of COVID-19 hotspots. If you happen to receive a text or buzz from the Government, you can report it to The Hotspot Doc, other users who have received a similar message can like it to share with others how popular that location was. This allows users to plan their routes ahead of time to avoid highly populated exposure sites.
How we built it
The main features of it is the ability to see how popular an exposure site was, this required an Open Street Map (OSM) and a Firebase database to store the user inputted locations. The Leaflet library was used to streamline the OSM geocoding easier.
Challenges we ran into
Time, one of the key aspects of the triple constraints, was definitely not on our side. Despite having planned out the basic ideas of what we wanted, multiple roadblocks had risen within our schedule, hindering the build process. This meant sacrificing planned features and working behind schedule.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team consisting of different undergraduate degrees and universities. This meant every person learnt a different programming language, framework, had varying technical backgrounds etc. Despite all this, we still managed to work well together and learned from one and another.
What we learned
Projects are a huge task, even more so if the time limit is short. Time management, resource allocation, risk mitigation, scope management, etc. To finish a project, planning is the most crucial aspect to achieving our milestones.
What's next for The Hotspot Doc
We believe that this web application can just be the start, while its future relevancy is uncertain, there are many more features to include such as:
- Colour coding the pin in accordance with population
- Having a risk index associated with the colour
- Login method to deter multiple entries.
