Inspiration
Every beauty camera is a liar. Filters smooth, brighten, and flatter — then you buy the product and the bathroom mirror tells the truth. This project comes out of the same thesis as my previous builds (Bargain Bazaar, Consensus Commerce): build agents and interfaces that negotiate with people honestly and prove the deal was fair. The Honest Mirror points that thesis at beauty commerce: skin analysis with receipts instead of flattery, and virtual try-on so you can see the fix on you before you pay for it.
What it does
- Skin analysis with receipts. YouCam Skin AI reads your skin and returns the raw scores — hydration, wrinkles, spots, redness — with the region evidence behind each number. No flattering defaults, no mystery numbers.
- Plain-English verdicts. A panel translates each score into what it actually means for your skin, and what would genuinely help.
- Try the fix on you. YouCam Apparel VTO previews the recommended products on your own face and body — the fix is shown on you, not on a retouched model.
- An honest ledger. What the AI recommends, why it recommends it, and what it costs — no fake urgency, no dark patterns.
How we built it
- Perfect Corp YouCam Skin AI API for skin analysis (hackathon credits: 1,000 API units)
- YouCam Apparel VTO API for virtual try-on
- A thin, fast web frontend (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) whose whole job is honesty: raw scores, region overlays, plain-English explanations, and a try-on step before any checkout
- Built solo by Aaron Grace — human taste, agent throughput: WorkBot (AI copilot) on throughput, Aaron on design and code
Challenges we ran into
- The API quota is finite (1,000 units), so scans are cached and replayed instead of re-billed on every refresh
- Mapping region-level analysis output into evidence panels that are honest without being brutal
- Keeping the try-on step fast enough to feel like a mirror, not a checkout line
What we learned
- A skin score is only as trustworthy as the UI around it — showing the receipts changes how people react to the same number
- Virtual try-on converts skepticism into confidence: seeing the fix on you beats reading about it
What's next for The Honest Mirror
- Night Ledger mode: overnight re-analysis and trend tracking, so progress is measured against your own baseline, not a filter
- Honest comparisons: same face, competing product regimens, side-by-side receipts
