Inspiration In our mission to encourage good financial behavior, we noticed that there were few financial education programs designed for young adults ages 17-29. In a world of digital and global financial activity, the potential for financial scams, and the upcoming long-term life decisions involving money, having this lack of financial knowledge can be extremely damaging. So our purpose is to give back to young individuals that are trying to work for a better financial future via interactive financial modules, account management, and savings/spending/budgeting tracking. We believe that financial mistakes can be mitigated through financial education!

What it does This interactive website allows young individuals to gain exposure to the fundamentals of financial topics of savings, investing, banking, goal setting, and the underlying importance of having good credit. Learning good financial knowledge is important, but putting them into practice is where real results show. That is why we incorporated interactive visual reports that allow users to track their spending and budget monthly. Through the use of this web platform, we encourage individuals from any background to learn how to make smart financial choices and become sharper at recognizing how to stabilize their financial future.

How we built it In our project, we wanted to create a financial literacy website with a database to hold our information. We chose to use WordPress for the front end, Google Cloud for hosting, and CockroachDB for our database. With this, we were able to create a live prototype of what we imagined while also using Node.JS, VueJS Framework, and Windows Powershell to connect all our moving parts. We spent 15+ hours working as fast as we could to try and make sure we had a working solution and a presentable prototype.

Challenges we ran into One challenge that we faced was connecting CockroachDB to our website. Initially, we were unsuccessful when connecting the database, because our group members were not as familiar with coding a foreign SQL database. Another challenge that we ran into was that not all group members were able to find a common meeting time, so we had to do as much as we could and pass it off to the next group member. Lastly, three out of four of our members are business majors, so we did not have much technical coding experience on our team, but that did not stop us and we were able to create a live working prototype along with our presentation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We are proud of our ability to work hard as a team and tackle any challenges that we have come across collectively. Having a great team is one of the many highlights from our hackathon experience. We’ve also been able to successfully build a web application without having prior advanced technical knowledge as we are a group of business-focused students that are exploring how to break into technology!

What we learned From this two-day hackathon, we have been very fortunate to have been able to utilize various different technologies such as the VueJS Framework to construct our web application and exploring the use of CockroachDB and CockroachDB Cloud to integrate a process for user learning of the finance modules and interactive activities. This was a great opportunity to not only work together and build teamwork skills, but also a great way to connect technology and apply it with another industry such as finance.

What's next for The Hive: Financial Learning As for our next steps, we would love to fully connect our web application to CockroachDB and share this platform on all of the finance avenues as possible. We want to also expand our interactive learning activities to Mobile Applications that anyone from all ages would be able to utilize on the go from anywhere in the world. Another area that we also want to build upon is having large financial institutions and organizations deliver their own activities straight from our Web and Mobile Applications, this would also be a wonderful opportunity to host World Class Speeches from Executive from these organizations.
