Inspiration

The discovery that beef production emits more CO2 than the aviation industry was eye-opening. This realization led to further investigation, which revealed the significant resource requirements of the beef industry, such as land, water, and feed, and its detrimental environmental impacts, including deforestation and methane emissions.

Project Goals

The project aims to raise awareness about the environmental consequences of food choices, enabling people to make informed decisions and reduce the demand for beef, thereby minimizing the industry's environmental footprint.

Methodology

Our team collected and analyzed data on carbon emissions from the beef and aviation industries, using it to develop a project focused on influencing food and travel habits.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges we experienced was the limited availability of reliable and relevant information, which complicated the process of data gathering and presentation. Additionally, our team faced technical difficulties when working with pandas in Jupyter notebooks, due to our limited expertise in handling such tools. These technical challenges added an extra layer of complexity to our project and required us to overcome the learning curve associated with new technologies.

What we learned

Effective sustainability projects require dependable data. Collaboration is vital for such projects. Addressing sustainability challenges necessitates innovative solutions. Individual actions contribute to promoting sustainability.

What's next for The Hidden Cost of Your Plate: Beef vs. Aviation Emissions

Next steps include encouraging individuals to reduce their carbon footprint by adopting sustainable food and travel choices, advocating for policy changes, and supporting organizations working towards sustainability goals.
